In
1954 Dallas Smith founded Dallas Smith Corp. in Indianapolis,
Indiana. The company developed, owned and operated automotive
pre-delivery centers which provided new
car get-ready services for General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor
Company and the Chrysler Corporation. These pre-delivery centers
prepared and delivered vehicles with "the highest quality
showroom condition" to U.S. automotive dealers! The company grew
to become the largest U.S. company operating automotive pre-delivery centers.
The division was sold in 1969 to the Southern Pacific Railroad.
In
1960, Dallas Smith formed a trucking division at the auto pre-delivery
center in Phoenix, Arizona to transport new General Motors vehicles
to auto dealers located in Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Mexico,
and Arizona. Over the next twenty five years the trucking company
had extremely high growth in its business as the western United
States experienced substantial increases in population. The trucking
business was acquired by Ryder in 1984.
During
the late 1960´s and 1970´s, Dallas Smith Corp had
divisions that owned and operated a Ford Motor Company dealership,
a national chain of car washes which was acquired by Gulf Oil
Corporation and a trailer manufacturing business that was acquired
by the Greyhound Corporation and the Burlington Northern Railroad. |
